New Year culture
Turkey’s New Year (Yılbaşı), was only officially recognized and celebrated in 1981. The government made January 1 a holiday, but not the Christmas. Locals enjoyed a quiet holiday meal as new year dinner with their families.
Today, Santa Claus (Noel Baba), a Western-influenced figure, has made his way to this area. Children write letters to him and expect to receive gifts. The squares of large cities in the Turkish Republic are lit up with Christmas trees and festive illumination.
Alanya, one of Turkey’s most cosmopolitan cities, has many foreign residents. More than 31 nationalities call the city home, including Japanese, Dutch, German and Dutch. Despite the small size of the city, it is home to many of the most renowned festivals in the country.
Because there are so many Europeans and Russians living in Alanya and everyone wants to enjoy traditional New Year decorations, there is a high demand for Christmas trees. To ensure everyone has fun, shops try to stockpile enough New Year’s products. Christmas trees are a popular item on the market, and they are very popular with Europeans as well as Russians. It is difficult to find natural trees within Alanya. However, potted trees can be purchased from open-air gardening stores. It is easy to buy a New Year tree in Turkey today on December. In large supermarkets of the European type of the Carrefour or Migros chains and Metro hypermarket, you will find a wide selection of Christmas trees– from miniature for a desktop to huge under 2 meters for a large living room.
